Diary of Hattie Sommerville 1905

Denver, Colo. Sept.4, 1905

Arrived in Denver yesterday at 11:45 o'clock. I start from home Thursday morning. Blanche met me at Douds and came to Ottumwa with me, where we stayed all night. I started from Ottumwa at 8:16. Had a fine trip out, near a full crowd on the car I was in. I did not get very tired, was so much to see. Frank met me at the depot and took me to his home. met his wife for the first time. This morning, Roy and I started out right away. We first went to the Capital. It is a very fine building. Went all through it from dome to basement. Next we went to the Corest House, a very nice building and the yard with it's fountain were nice. Next we went to the great Denver store where they keep everything. Then into some smaller places. Also to the Quarry shop my brothers place of business. Then home I am tired to death.

Sept. 3

Felt about played out when I got up this morning. After breakfast Frank and I drove out to the cemetery. My but it is a pretty place. Some of the prettiest stones and the prettiest flowers I ever saw. In the round trip we drove about 16 miles. The sun did not feel very warm but when I got home I was baked on one side of my face. After dinner we went a car ride, went out to the University and then out to Englewood to the end of the trolley car line. From there, there is a horse car runs a few miles each way. After supper Frank and Ella went riding and Roy and I went to the Christian church and heard Mr. Tyler, one of the fine preachers of the area. We walked a mile to get there and one  to get back so I did very well for one day.

Sept. 4

Today is Labor Day. Roy and I went down town at 9 o'clock to get a good place to see the parade. There was quite a big crowd. While the men look nice, I did not think it amounted to very much. It drizzled rain all the time. We came home at noon and stayed the rest of the day.

Sept. 5

A nice morning. About 10 o'clock, Roy and I went out to Elitch's garden. It is a beautiful place. Such beautiful flowers and roads. There was merry-go-rounds of all kinds. children's play garden. In the afternoon, there was a children's theater. They did fine. We had to hussle to get car home. It began to rain, but we got home all right. Had Quite a little rain last night.

Sept. 6

Was a beautiful morning. Today was the great G.A.R. parade. Ella went today. So I went on the car down to the shop and she and Roy rode. Then Roy and I went up the street to see. The streets were packed, couldn't have fell down if you had of tried. The parade was grand. Took it 3 1/2 hours to pass. Claim there was 32,000 in it. My but I was tired. We all came back to the shop and rested and Ella and I came home in the buggy. This evening we all went down to see the fire parade. It was very fine. There was 14 companys out and the people, thousands of them just had to push your way. We were all tired when we got home.

Sept. 7

Another nice day. I washed and ironed a few things this morning. This afternoon, Roy and I got ready to go to see Nan Webb. Just as we was ready, there was a storm came up. It did not rain very much here so about three o'clock we started. Walked a mile to the car and got away out in E. Denver and walked about 5 miles looking for a number and we did not find it and had to come home. I am just about dead to night. Frank and Ella are out in the buggy trying to find the place. Had a letter from Nettie Bennett saying for me to come up there. Am going Monday.

Sept. 8

Felt awfully bum this morning. Had the neuralgia in my face all night. We stayed at home this morning. This afternoon, Roy and I went to see my cousin Mrs Webb. Had a very pleasant visit. I had not seen her since I was 7 years old. After supper, Frank and I went and called on Mr. and Mrs. Valen, also on Mr. and Mrs. Hinten. They all use to live at Keosauqua. Mr. Carrie Walker is at the Hinten's. Frank and I both went to school with her. Came home tired and all went to bed.

Sept. 9

A beautiful day. Early this morning, Ella and I took the horse and buggy and went down to the market and got some things and then drove out to the park. Oh it is the prettiest place, the lake! the flowers! everything so nice. On our way we called at Will McPherron's just a few minutes. By the time we got home we had drove about 10 miles. This afternoon we have baked and did what we ought to of done this morning but we wanted to go while it was cool. Roy has gone to the races at the park.

Sept. 10

A beautiful day. Frank and I started out to go to church. Went out on Capital hill and went to the Presbyterian church. The finest church I ever was in. My it was nice. A great pipe organ and a big choir. And a fine preacher, a Mr. Coy. There was about 2,000 persons at church. Stayed at home all afternoon. At night we all went to Trinity ME church. While it was large and nice it did not compare with the Presbyterian and the preacher did compare with the other one. We walked along the streets and looked at the show windows as we went home. It is 6 years today since Crete died and Blanch is 28 years old today.

Sept. 11

Started at 7 o'clock this morning for Longmont. Frank came to the depot with me. He went to Pueblo to the fair. It was a nice trip here, a good view of the mountains all the way. I got to Longmont at 11 no one there, so I phoned out and Nettie told me to go to the High School, (that Nellie was there,) and wait. As soon as Tom came in from work they hitched up and came in for me. My but it is nice around here. Can see so far and see the mountains all the time. They treat me fine and I feel at home.

Sept. 12

A fine day. Nettie and I have talked all day. We hardly took time to breathe. After Nellie came home we took the buggy and went riding.

Sept. 13

Another day of talk. I washed some. We went riding again this evening.

Sept. 14

A lovely day. This morning at 8 o'clock, Tom, Nettie and I started out in the surry. We went to the beet sugar factory. My but it is a big place. 12 hundred tons of beets in a day. Such a chimney. 150 feet high, the building is a half mile long. Then we drove all through Longmont and on home. Went about 10 miles. Tom had to go and Thrash. After dinner when the children came home from school, we took the buggy and went over to where they were thrashing. I never saw any thing like the way they work.

Sept 15

Nettie and I both feel bum today. I am as near having the headache as I have been since I came to Colo. We have stayed at home all day.

Sept. 16

We all got up at 4 o'clock, got our breakfast over and started for the mountains. My but it was cold. It had snowed in the mountains last night. We could see it very plain. We went about 20 miles up to Long Peak on what is called North Fork road. It was just grand. The road runs along the side of the St. Vreins river. It is so swift and runs over the great rocks and makes a deafening roar. We camped and got our dinner. Tom fished some. Then we started back as I was to be at Niwot to catch the 4:45 train. We stopped at Lyons and got us some pop to drink. There we seen we would have to drive fast or miss the train and we did the last mile we made in ten minutes. I got to Denver about 6:45, Frank was at the train. We got home about 7:30.

Sept. 17

Got out this morning early. Frank and I started at 7 o'clock to take the trip around the Loop. It is too grand to describe. The mountains are just grand. I love them. Wish I could stay awhile up in them. We passed through several nice towns and everything growing just the as we have. We stood on the platform most of the way up to Silver Plume. We could see back so far. The altitude did not affect me at all. We got our dinner and then went up to the quarry where they got the granite for the shop. We started back at 3:10. It was warm and nice all day until about 4 o'clock it began to blow and got awful cold. While we were up there we went in the Mendota mine vent in the ground 11,000 feet. It was cool and damp in there. After you got in that far, there was an engine house and all the fixtures and a shaft that goes down 800 feet. I was just as far in the ground as I wanted to be.

Sept. 18

Rained this morning so we did not plan to go anywhere, and we had not done our work when the doorbell rang. Ella went to the door and there was one of her old girl friends from her old home that she had not seen for 15 years. Her train had to wait here until 4 O'clock so she came to Ella's. Had a nice visit and Ella took her downtown and to the train. Ironed some waists, and rested. I feel pretty tired after so much going.

Sept. 19

A beautiful day. Ella and I went out riding and called at McPherons, came home, got our dinner and rested until evening. Then we all went to the theater. It was very good.
