1 CONC Clyde was listed in the 1900 US Census as a common laborer. However in 
1 CONC later life we know he became a carpenter.  He had 3 wives. He outlived 
1 CONC all but the last one. Betty said that Clyde worked on the Market Street 
1 CONC Bridge and the Vine Street Bridge.  These were important jobs for him. 
1 CONC They must have meant not only money, but must also have given him a sense 
1 CONC of satisfaction.  She said that he and Mildred liked to party down at the 
1 CONC Moose lodge.  Church was not a large part of their lives.  The are both

1 CONC Clyde Asahel Pickett and Mildred Sommerville Pickett moved to Ottumwa 
1 CONC shortly after they were married where Clyde worked as a house carpenter 
1 CONC and common laborer.  They lived their married life together at 243 North 
1 CONC Davis St where a daughter was born to them named Virginia Harriet Pickett 
1 CONC on Aug 15, 1917.  The house on Davis street still stands but is not much 
1 CONC to look at. Although they were a relatively poor family, somehow they 
1 CONC managed to survive.  Carpentry is a seasonal profession and the during 
1 CONC the Winter, jobs were sparse.  However, Clyde and Mildred were people who 
1 CONC didn't let the fact that they had very little, get them down.  They 
1 CONC enjoyed having fun and liked to party.  Most of their partying was done 
1 CONC down at the local Moose Lodge in Ottumwa.  Church was not a large part of 
1 CONC their lives.

1 CONC Betty Schwengles , remembers that Clyde worked on a couple of 
1 CONC construction projects in Ottumwa, which not only were prestigious and 
1 CONC must have given Clyde a great deal of satisfaction, but must have 
1 CONC benefited him financially.  She remembers that She and Virginia would 
1 CONC spend the night together occasionally when they were girls.  When they 
1 CONC would stay with Clyde and Mildred, Mildred would give them some money and 
1 CONC they would go to the local grocery and buy some things to eat for 
1 CONC dinner.  Betty thought this was great.  When they would stay with Frank 
1 CONC and Adeline, Adeline would always cook meat and vegetables and Virginia 
1 CONC always loved Adeline's home cooking.  Betty could not remember there 
1 CONC being a bath or shower in Clyde and Mildred's house.  She said that 
1 CONC Mildred was fond of giving spit baths to Virginia and to Betty when she 
1 CONC was there.  This art was not lost on Virginia.  Betty also said that 
1 CONC Mildred had a favorite saying which was, "Didn't you know that all 
1 CONC Sommerville girls are good looking, and good cooks". On Feb 11, 1936, 
1 CONC Mildred died after a long and painful illness of some form of cancer.  
1 CONC Betty remembers being taken in to see Mildred one last time before she 
1 CONC died in order to say good by.  She remembers that Mildred was in a great 
1 CONC deal of pain and it being a very sad occasion.

1 CONC Clyde remarried some time in 1936 to Virgie M Hoffman. Virgie had lived 
1 CONC with her husband before they were married and it caused quite a scandal. 
1 CONC However, Clyde married her anyway and they lived happily until Virgies 
1 CONC death in 1952. Clyde again remarried about 1955 to a woman named Ethel.

1 CONC George Pickett started his career in the newspaper business as a cub 
1 CONC printer in Ottumwa. At age 20 he moved to Tulsa, OK and got a job as 
1 CONC editor of a small newspaper called "The New Era". This paper competed 
1 CONC against a newspaper called "The Indian Republican". His duties with "The 
1 CONC New Era" which eventually became the "Tulsa Tribune" included serving as 
1 CONC business manager, advertinsing manager, and treasuer. He assumed the 
1 CONC position of composing room foreman of the Tulsa Democrat-Tribune in 1919. 
1 CONC He held this position for many years before venturing into other business 
1 CONC fields. But eventually he came back to the Tulsa newspapers as a proof 
1 CONC reader and worked till his death at age 80.

1 CONC McGee and Willian died Dec 3, 1925 at the age of 78. Martha McGee was 
1 CONC born July 23, 1852 and died Nov 19, 1925 and was the daughter of John 
1 CONC Watkins. They died just 15 days apart. Virgie lived in Ottumwa, IA most 
1 CONC of her life and was a member of the First Christian Church. She had three 
1 CONC brothers all of whom preceded her in death. They were Elmer McGee of 
1 CONC Milwaukee, Wis., Harry McGee of Council Bluffs, IA, And Walter McGee of 
1 CONC Ottumwa, IA.

1 CONC Virgie's first husband was a barber named Ernest E "Curley" Hoffmann and 
1 CONC it was his house that we all remember at 415 Gara St. There is some doubt 
1 CONC as to whether they were ever officially married, but at some point Virgie 
1 CONC moved in with Curley. According to Betty Schwengels, there was a lot of 
1 CONC talk about that situation. Anyhow, on Aug 9, 1924, Curley had a heart 
1 CONC attack and died. According to his obit, "He awakened and called his wife. 
1 CONC Then he sat up in bed and fell over, dying almost immediately." He was a 
1 CONC member of the First Christian Church and a Mason.

1 CONC Virgie and Curley had a child named Gerald McGee, who is listed in 
1 CONC Ernest's obit as a son Gerald McGee. However in Virgie's obit he is 
1 CONC listed as nephew Gerald McGee. It's kind of hard to figure where he fits 
1 CONC into the picture, but he could be Virgie's and Ernest's kid and since 
1 CONC they weren't married, he was given the name of the mother.

1 CONC In any case James Pickett  married Belinda Cooley , whose father Asahel 
1 CONC Cooley deeded 100 acres of land to the young couple, on Dec 21, 1840.  
1 CONC They built a house on this property and farmed the land.  The house is 
1 CONC still there in Van Buren Co near Cantril, IA and was known as "The Old 
1 CONC Pickett Place".  It was purchased for $1.25 an acre and was sold after 
1 CONC the death of Leroy S. Pickett in 1915.

1 CONC James Pickett served in the Mexican War and in the Civil War.  He and son 
1 CONC Asahel enlisted in the 2nd Iowa Infantry on May 1, 1861 and some time 
1 CONC later James was promoted to the rank of Wagoner.  In March of 1862 the 
1 CONC 2nd fought bravely at the Battle of Shiloh and later at the siege of 
1 CONC Corinth.  James was wounded in one of these battles and discharged from 
1 CONC the military for a disability on Sep 30, 1862. Asahel fought on until the 
1 CONC end of the War.

1 CONC James and Belinda had four children:  Asahel Cooley Pickett  born in 
1 CONC 1842, married in 1866 to Sarah Emily Friend, James McKendree Pickett  
1 CONC born in 1847 and married on Aug 23, 1877 to Elvira Sarah Willson, Leroy 
1 CONC Samuel Pickett  born in 1844, never married, and Josephine Pickett  born 
1 CONC in 1859, married nee Bushong. James and Belinda along with their two 
1 CONC children, Asahel and Leroy, moved to Van Buren, Co, Iowa from Athens Co, 
1 CONC Ohio in 1844. 
1 CONT In 1855, James, Belinda, Asahel, Young James, and Leroy, crossed the 
1 CONC plains to California in a Covered Wagon.  The trip took 6 months.  After 
1 CONC a year in California, Belinda and the children were to return to Iowa on 
1 CONC a ship called the "Yankee Blade" which sailed out of San Francisco.  
1 CONC However, they were shipwrecked near Santa Barbara and lost everything 
1 CONC they had, including a bag of gold worth $1,000.  Later they tried the 
1 CONC trip again, and this time were successful.  Josephine was born after 
1 CONC their safe return to Iowa in 1859.

1 CONC Larry was born in Centralia, IL but grew up in Chicago, IL. He attended 
1 CONC and graduated from the Tilden Technical High School in Chicago in 1929. 
1 CONC Lawrence Sr. attended the University of Illinois and graduated in 1933 
1 CONC with a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering.  However, because jobs were 
1 CONC hard to find at this time, Lawrence ended up in Ottumwa, IA working for 
1 CONC Swift and Co. at a plant that made ice cream. Here he was force to do 
1 CONC something other than engineering work.  It was in Ottumwa that he met 
1 CONC Virginia Harriet Pickett daughter of Clyde and Mildred Pickett.  Lawrence 
1 CONC and Virginia were married in Ottumwa on Oct 14, 1939 which was the same 
1 CONC date Lawrence's parents were married 31 years earlier.

1 CONC Not long after marriage, Lawrence was offered an engineering position 
1 CONC with the Western Electric Co in Chicago, IL.  To a small town girl like 
1 CONC Virginia, this was rather traumatic.  She had never been out of Iowa and 
1 CONC now to have to leave all her friends and go live in the big city of 
1 CONC Chicago was going to be tough.  But she knew it was necessary for 
1 CONC Lawrence's career so she cried a few tears and left without a fight.

1 CONC On Sep 6, 1940 Lawrence and Virginia's first child Lawrence Jr (Lonny) 
1 CONC was born.  About a year latter they moved into a house at 3729 W 65th 
1 CONC St.  Then two years later on Dec 14, 1943 Mary Sue was born and three 
1 CONC years after that on Aug 2, 1946 Mildred Ann came along.  The Rettinger's 
1 CONC lived there in Chicago until Jun 1954 at which time Lawrence asked for 
1 CONC and received a transfer with Western Electric to Winston Salem, NC.  So 
1 CONC the family pulled up stakes and made the move to the South.  Kind of 
1 CONC traumatic for their children at the time but in retrospect it was a good 
1 CONC move for all concerned.

1 CONC Lawrence worked for  Western Electric in Winston Salem first as a 
1 CONC planning engineer and latter  as a manufacturing engineer, until his 
1 CONC retirement on Dec 31, 1973 after 34 years of service. He was a Past 
1 CONC Master and Past Secretary of South Gate Lodge #968 at Chicago, Illinois 
1 CONC (now defunct) and was a member and a past treasurer of Pioneer Lodge 
1 CONC #685. He was also a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Camel Shrine 
1 CONC #5 and past treasurer of Winston Salem Lodge #449 B.P.O. Elks. He was a 
1 CONC member of St. John's Lutheran Church. In all he was a 50 year member of 
1 CONC the Masonic Lodge. He and Virginia were members of St. Johns Missouri 
1 CONC Senod Lutheran Church in Winston Salem, NC and both held various offices 
1 CONC with that church.
