They lived their married life together at 243 North 1 CONC Davis St where a daughter was born to them named Virginia Harriet Pickett 1 CONC on Aug 15, 1917. The house on Davis street still stands but is not much 1 CONC to look at. Although they were a relatively poor family, somehow they 1 CONC managed to survive. Carpentry is a seasonal profession and the during 1 CONC the Winter, jobs were sparse. However, Clyde and Mildred were people who 1 CONC didn't let the fact that they had very little, get them down. They 1 CONC enjoyed having fun and liked to party. Most of their partying was done 1 CONC down at the local Moose Lodge in Ottumwa. She remembers that She and Virginia would 1 CONC spend the night together occasionally when they were girls. When they 1 CONC would stay with Clyde and Mildred, Mildred would give them some money and 1 CONC they would go to the local grocery and buy some things to eat for 1 CONC dinner. Betty thought this was great. When they would stay with Frank 1 CONC and Adeline, Adeline would always cook meat and vegetables and Virginia 1 CONC always loved Adeline's home cooking. Betty could not remember there 1 CONC being a bath or shower in Clyde and Mildred's house. She said that 1 CONC Mildred was fond of giving spit baths to Virginia and to Betty when she 1 CONC was there. This art was not lost on Virginia. Betty also said that 1 CONC Mildred had a favorite saying which was, "Didn't you know that all 1 CONC Sommerville girls are good looking, and good cooks". On Feb 11, 1936, 1 CONC Mildred died after a long and painful illness of some form of cancer. 1 CONC Betty remembers being taken in to see Mildred one last time before she 1 CONC died in order to say good by. So far I 1 CONC have not been able to verify that. But during the 1870 US Census for 1 CONC Keosauqua, IA, Issac and Lucy A are living there with their three 1 CONC children and Issac's mother Lavana. The register has been donated to the Van 1 CONC Buren County Historical Society by William Kerr, formerly of Bonaparte. 1 CONT George F. Sommerville of Keosauqua was once a partner in the old Opera 1 CONC House in Keosauqua and in his early days spent three years with a circus 1 CONC as a bill poster, traveling over much of the southwest.. 1 CONT Today at 93, Sommerville lives with his sister, Cleo Dorothy, 89, and 1 CONC enjoys reminiscing about the way his hometown used to be. 1 CONT "I can just shut my eyes and go up and down the streets remembering where 1 CONC the houses were and who lived in them," Sommerville says. 1 CONT "People say Keosauqua doesn't change, but I can tell you it's changed 1 CONC plenty since I was a boy," he adds. Sommerville, who was a house painter 1 CONC for many years, is able to read even though he lost his right eye years 1 CONC ago, and his keen memory helps him remain interested in the town. 1 CONT In recalling his days as an opera house partner with Joe Price, 1 CONC Sommerville says he often appeared in the home talent productions along 1 CONC with Io Therme, former resident, and the late Ethel Price. Sarah Garrett, 1 CONC who now lives at the Good Samaritan Home in Keosauqua, also appeared in 1 CONC some shows with two sisters, and Sommerville has a picture to prove it. 1 CONT Where did they get the scripts? 1 CONT "We stole them," chuckles Sommerville. "We didn't have any operating 1 CONC budget to speak of, so we'd send off for some plays to read over. Paul 1 CONC Roberts, who was also active in the Opera House, was a 'bear cat' on the 1 CONC typewriter. He would type off those scripts and we'd send them back 1 CONC saying we couldn't use them. Then we'd rename the shows and put them on. 1 CONT "We should have been put in jail, I guess," he concludes his story. 1 CONT The Opera House stood next to the present location of the United 1 CONC Methodist parsonage and the cement steps leading up to the old brick 1 CONC building is still there. 1 CONT Chautauqua was also popular in those days, with shows put on in the Van 1 CONC Buren County courthouse lawn. 1 CONT Sommerville has a picture of his classmates taken when he was in first 1 CONC grade. There were 63 primary students in the group, all taught by Ione 1 CONC Snyder, who was a teacher in Keosauqua for 50 years. 1 CONT "Any teacher who had that many students today would fall over dead," 1 CONC Sommerville comments. "And I expect she should," he adds. 1 CONT One of the classmates is Bess Overman, 90 of Keosauqua. "That's Bessie 1 CONC right there, I think," Sommerville points out. He believes that he and 1 CONC his sister along with Miss Overman and her cousin, Dr. Frank McChurg, a 1 CONC Keosauqua dentist, are the oldest native residents of the community. Cleo 1 CONC Dorothy worked as the first telephone operator for the Farmers Exchange 1 CONC when she was 16. 1 CONT All eight of the Sommerville brothers and sisters with the exception of 1 CONC the oldest daughter were born in a small brick dwelling near downtown 1 CONC Keosauqua. Earlier the building had been used as a school known as the 1 CONC Dimon institute. The Arnold Barker residence stands there today. 1 CONT The population of Keosauqua has remained about constant over the years, 1 CONC never varying much from slightly over the one thousand mark. In early 1 CONC days, however, a third of the residents were black. There were two Negro 1 CONC churches, one of which was demolished in Keosauqua's tornado of 1967, and 1 CONC the other stood near the Des Moines River south of the business district. 1 CONT Most of the laboring population worked either for the Manning family or 1 CONC for W. A. Duckworth, Sommerville says. 1 CONT There were no less than three newspapers in town, along with several 1 CONC groceries, two hotels, two or three photographers and two banks. 1 CONT Doctors? "There were more doctors than patients," he laughs, adding, "Oh, 1 CONC gosh, what memories." A few early medical doctors he names quickly are 1 CONC Dr. Eno, Dr. McKibbin, Dr. Harris, Dr. Strickling and Dr. Duckworth. "It 1 CONC only took them two or three years to go through medical school at 1 CONC Keokuk," he explains. 1 CONT A founder of the town, Edwin Manning, built his first home on the block 1 CONC now occupied by Pedrick's Funeral Home and the Art Ovrom home. 1 CONT "Mrs. Manning had an elm tree planted there the day Lincoln was 1 CONC assassinated, and later a carpenter cut it down and oh, how she did 1 CONC grieve. She had the stump dug out and saved for a long time," Sommerville 1 CONC says. 1 CONT Hotel Manning in early days was a general store and faced the Des Moines 1 CONC River. Sommerville remembers the owner, Edwin Manning well and describes 1 CONC him as a big, impressive man. 1 CONT "Heck, they say the hotel is so old, but a third of the houses in town 1 CONC are older than it is," Sommerville says. Many of the houses were moved to 1 CONC different locations over the years. 1 CONT "I helped paint your house and helped with the cistern, too," he tells a 1 CONC visitor, whose house was built in 1906. "I remember being down in the 1 CONC cistern handing bricks to the mason. An assistant at the top dropped a 1 CONC brick right on my head." He laughingly remembers the event, gently 1 CONC rubbing that long-age sore spot on his head. 1 CONT Sommerville recently enjoyed looking over an old register for the 1 CONC Sommerville House in Keosauqua. The guest book has been donated to the 1 CONC Van Buren County Historical Society by William Kerr, former publisher of 1 CONC the Bonaparte Record - Republican. 1 CONT The early hotel, which stood where the Beer TV store is today was 1 CONC operated by Sommerville's grandfather, George W. Sommerville, for several 1 CONC years. Entries in the old register are dated from 1872 to 1876. 1 CONT Occasionally a touring group of actors stayed at the hotel. One such 1 CONC group registered Dec. 27 1873 and left word to be called at half-past 1 CONC five in the morning. Their show was called "Leavitt's Swiss Ringers, a 1 CONC Variety & Sensational Troupe." 1 CONT Most of the hotel guests were from very nearby towns, reminding us that 1 CONC travel of a few miles per day was the rule in those times. A few towns 1 CONC mentioned such as Pierceville and Utica no longer exist. 1 CONT William Sanford Sommerville, the father of George F. Sommerville and Mrs. 1 CONC Dorothy, was a harness maker with a shop near Hotel Manning. Their 1 CONC grandfather in addition to running the Sommerville House, was a trunk 1 CONC maker and also served as county sheriff. He had been a captain in the 1 CONC 19th infantry volunteers during the Civil War. 1 CONT Sommerville remembers that 1903 was a bad year for Keosauqua. The boiler 1 CONC at the grist mill exploded on Feb. 27, killing Aton Neece, Sr. and his 1 CONC son, George. Then on June 5, the worst flood ever occurred on the Des 1 CONC Moines River. The entire downtown was flooded and the water got up to the 1 CONC Dr. Frank McClurg residence. 1 CONT In these days there was a board Fence all around the three-story school 1 CONC and students were not supposed to go out of the yard. "A lot of bad boys 1 CONC did anyway," according to Sommerville. 1 CONT Among his other early recollections are the first movies uptown, three 1 CONC livery stables, three barber shops (where a shave and haircut cost 35 1 CONC cents) and a moonshine still operating at Pittsburg. Ed Irish owned the 1 CONC first automobile in town. "Every time it went by we left the table to see 1 CONC it," Sommerville chuckles. 1 CONT He also remembers an old log jail located about where the McGrath law 1 CONC office is today and a main street often so muddy people could hardly get 1 CONC up and down it by horse. There were board sidewalks all over town. 1 CONT "I can remember plain as anything when the Duckworth building went up, 1 CONC the same year as the Christian Church, in 1891. The county fair was held 1 CONC this side of Oak Lawn cemetery then, and there was an old engine house 1 CONC where the coal yards are. A coach and a baggage car would make two or 1 CONC three trips a day to Mt. Zion and back. 1 CONT "They had lots of revival meetings back then, with lots of shouting. The 1 CONC Methodists were the best at it. And they used to ring the church bell the 1 CONC number of years the deceased had lived. We used to count up for someone 1 CONC we weren't sure about. 1 CONT "I can remember 300 or 400 people on flatboats coming down the Des Moines 1 CONC River with "Kelly's Army of the Unemployed." This was during Cleveland's 1 CONC last term (1894) and they were part of Coxey's Army. They got off at 1 CONC Keosauqua and were fed by people of the community. 1 CONT "Word had come on ahead of them that it was a good idea to feed them, 1 CONC since some of the men had gotten pretty frisky up at Oskaloosa. They had 1 CONC to build a chute for the flatboats down at the woolen mills in Bonaparte. 1 CONT "Jack London was with them," Sommerville adds almost as an afterthought, 1 CONC calling up still another fact from his amazing memory. 1 CONT "Oh, the old place has changed. Now that I can't do much of anything else 1 CONC I just sit here and go up and down all the streets in my mind," says 1 CONC Sommerville. 1 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 CONC -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 CONC ---------------------------------------------- 0 @I1155@ INDI 1 NAME Ruth /Sommerville/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 FEB 1884 2 PLAC Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 DEC 1888 2 PLAC Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA 1 FAMC @F016@ 0 @I1166@ INDI 1 NAME Cleo Onaira /Sommerville/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 MAR 1886 2 PLAC Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 FEB 1980 2 PLAC Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA 1 FAMS @F006@ 1 FAMC @F016@ 1 NOTE @NI1166@ 0 @NI1166@ NOTE 1 CONC Cleo Sommerville married Walter Dorothy on Aug 11, 1908 in Keokuk, IA. 1 CONC Walter died sometime during the fortys or fifties and she went to live 1 CONC with her brother George, who was also a widower at this time. I have proven that 1 CONC William Sr.'s father was precisely the James Campbell mentioned above, 1 CONC who died circa 1767. That James left two minor sons, John and William, 1 CONC along with an interest in some property at the head of St. Martin's 1 CONC River. Of course, that wasn't far from the property disposed of by my 1 CONC William Campbell in his move to Preble County, Ohio about sixty years 1 CONC later. Much of the confusion arises because of the shift in the lower 1 CONC boundary of Delaware about the time James died; specifically, upper 1 CONC Worcester County, Maryland turned to lower Sussex County, Delaware, but 1 CONC kept the name "Baltimore Hundred" on both sides of the line. Many of the 1 CONC deeds of this place and era went unrecorded in Delaware. Also, much of 1 CONC the land suffered a drift in the names over time (Fortune became Forten, 1 CONC Collins' Lot may have become Long's Lot, etc). An understanding of James' 1 CONC parentage is clouded by the same problem, as well as the fact that James 1 CONC pre-deceased his possible father, that earliest Ebenezer Campbell. 1 CONT From Julian Livingston's MicroHistory and Quantum People web page -- 1 CONT Julian Livingston's MicroHistory and Quantum People. 1 CONT http://home.bluemarble.net/~julian/ 0 @NI1284@ NOTE 1 CONC Data from here and further back comes from --Curtis C.
