Note for:   Seth Athey Sommerville,   22 JUN 1893 - 1987         Index

Individual Note:
Seth married Rose Bonnie Fultz on Jun 22, 1915 and they had three children Beatrice (b. Nov 19, 1915), Josephine (b. Nov 29, 1917), and Leona (b. 1919). I have talked to Josephine and Leona and their nephews Ralph Frank and Carolyn Phillips. It seems that after Rose and Seth were married, they moved to Ottumwa and later Keokuk. Seth and Bonnie were divorced about six years later and Josephine went to live with her uncle George F Sommerville in Keosauqua. During this time Seth worked as a barker for Barium and Baileys circus. He also took up bootlegging for a living and because of this ended up in jail a couple of times. Bonnie was also living the wild and dangerous life in Chicago. She was the girl friend of a Chicago gangland mobster. When Josephine was about 9 years old, the two oldest children went to live with their father in Detroit for a year. By this time Seth had temporarily cleaned up his act. A year later the girls ended up back with their mother in Detroit. During the time Josephine was being cared for by George Sommerville, Josephine and Virginia Pickett, who were cousins, used to play together and spend the night together when they were girls.

Seth attended Geo. Sommerville's funeral in 1977 and was living in Atlanta GA at the time. He was living in Marshalltown in 1917 and living in Des Moines in 1918. He moved to Atlanta after the death of Claira in 1935 and married Mertis in 1936.

Note for:   James Pickett,   13 OCT 1817 - 16 DEC 1902         Index

Individual Note:
In any case James Pickett married Belinda Cooley , whose father Asahel Cooley deeded 100 acres of land to the young couple, on Dec 21, 1840. They built a house on this property and farmed the land. The house is still there in Van Buren Co near Cantril, IA and was known as "The Old Pickett Place". It was purchased for $1.25 an acre and was sold after the death of Leroy S. Pickett in 1915.

James Pickett served in the Mexican War and in the Civil War. He and son Asahel enlisted in the 2nd Iowa Infantry on May 1, 1861 and some time later James was promoted to the rank of Wagoner. In March of 1862 the 2nd fought bravely at the Battle of Shiloh and later at the siege of Corinth. James was wounded in one of these battles and discharged from the military for a disability on Sep 30, 1862. Asahel fought on until the end of the War.

James and Belinda had four children: Asahel Cooley Pickett born in 1842, married in 1866 to Sarah Emily Friend, James McKendree Pickett born in 1847 and married on Aug 23, 1877 to Elvira Sarah Willson, Leroy Samuel Pickett born in 1844, never married, and Josephine Pickett born in 1859, married nee Bushong. James and Belinda along with their two children, Asahel and Leroy, moved to Van Buren, Co, Iowa from Athens Co, Ohio in 1844.
In 1855, James, Belinda, Asahel, Young James, and Leroy, crossed the plains to California in a Covered Wagon. The trip took 6 months. After a year in California, Belinda and the children were to return to Iowa on a ship called the "Yankee Blade" which sailed out of San Francisco. However, they were shipwrecked near Santa Barbara and lost everything they had, including a bag of gold worth $1,000. Later they tried the trip again, and this time were successful. Josephine was born after their safe return to Iowa in 1859.
