Individual Note: According to the "Pickett Family History" which contains information passed down through the Pickett family, Samuel was the brother of Heathcote Pickett and was a ranger on the frontier from Bedford Co, PA, 1778 - 1783. There is some doubt as to whether this is true or not.
There is no direct evidence that this Samuel is the father of James Pickett. It seems there were two Heathcotes at about this time, one from Indiana and the other from Ohio. The ranger reference above assumes that we descend from the Indiana Picketts. I tend to believe we are descended from the Ohio Picketts and here is why.
First, there apparently was family information passed down by our Picketts that James' fathers name was Samuel and that Samuel had a brother named Heathcoat. The Ohio Picketts pass this test also and are located in Athens Co, OH which is where James and Belinda were married. So in my humble opinion, these are the Picketts we are looking for. The half page write up called "Heathcoat Pickett Family" by Mozelle Ralston indicates that there was a Heatcoat Pickett who married Elizabeth Benjamin and he had a brother Samuel Pickett who married Charity Young. Samuel and Charity would seem to be our ancestors. Samuel's and Heathcoat's parents would then be James H. and Temperence Price Pickett.
Dates from 1850 Handcock Co, OH census and Dr. Samuel Pickett bio in History of Wyandot Co, OH.
